CfP: Labour Process and the Environmental Crisis in a Multipolar World (April 2025, Chile); DL: 31 Oct, 2024

The International Labour Process Conference is one of the longest established and best known global events for empirical and theoretical discussion of work, employment and capitalist transformations. Every year, the conference brings together researchers and policy makers from a variety of countries in order to share knowledge and initiate new collaborations. The International Labour Process Conference will return to South America in 202, this time in Chile.

The ILPC welcomes papers on a wide range of topics regarding the labour process, labour markets, labour relations, reproduction of labour and capitalist transformation. This year special focus will be on the interlinkages between the multipolar changes of the world system, the environmental/ecological questions, and the processes of change in labour processes, regimes of exploitation, systems of regulation and working-class action and resistance. This focus becomes particularly relevant for a conference that is being hosted in a Latin American country. Global South’s regions are, indeed, the territories in which resource extraction (of natural resources and human beings, through migration and brain drain), environmental degradation and global regimes of exploitation, converge to a greater scale, reproducing new forms of imperialism and dependency. This requires an effort to read and interpret classical labour process topics and analyses with a less Eurocentric and de-colonial approach. In line with this focus, the organizers particularly welcome abstracts, symposia and streams proposals with a comparative South/South and South/North angle and addressing labour studies from the perspective of sociology, anthropology, geography, development studies, history and political economy.

Abstracts should be of 350 to 500 words and will be externally evaluated. Papers must not have been previously published or presented elsewhere. They should contain key words indicating the focus of research as well as information about theoretical orientation, methodology, and findings. Abstract submission will be done through the ILPC website (ilpc.org.uk) and will be open between 1st of September 2024 and 31st of October 2024. Decisions of acceptance will be sent out by early December 2024. Abstracts might be submitted to the general conference or to special streams. The latter will be ann ounced by the beginning of September 2024.
