CfP: Special Issue Open Call - Coastal Squeeze: Beaches under Socio-Economic and Ecological Pressure; DL: 30 Oct., 2024

In 2017, the French journal Actes de la Recherche en Sciences Sociales ( ARSS ) published a special issue entitled “Beaches, Contested Territories” ( Plages, territoires contestés ). In this issue, Jennifer Bidet and Elsa Devienne brought together articles that challenge current approaches to beaches in the social sciences, especially on the coveted “sandy beaches”. In general, the established literature on the subject presents the gradual transformation of beaches from hostile territories to territories of leisure and vacation, without considering both social constraints and power relations as decisive elements in this transformation. On the other hand, the main argument of the ARSS editors is that beaches are not isolated geographical territories, but rather territories embedded in political and economic circuits that occur at the local, regional, national and international levels. Thus, beaches are contested territories that are at the center of contemporary political and economic disputes. From this perspective, beach studies are of interest to everyone, not just those who live near the sea.

This special issue of TOMO on “ Coastal Squeeze : Beaches under Socioeconomic and Ecological Pressure” is aligned with the focus and scope of the ARSS special issue. The editors therefore invite social scientists, particularly economic sociologists, to submit articles that analytically go beyond the idea of beaches as isolated territories and expose the logic of contemporary socioeconomic and ecological pressures at local, regional, national or global levels, taking into account the forms of beach appropriation and disputes.
