New Position: Full/Associate Professor of Urban Anthropology or Sociology, Geneva, DL: 19 January 2022

The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies Geneva, Switzerland invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of Full/Associate Professor of Urban Anthropology or Sociology.

The Graduate Institute aims to recruit an anthropologist or sociologist at the rank of Full/Associate Professor, specializing in Urban Anthropology and/or Sociology. 

The Institute is especially interested in scholars whose work demonstrates empirically grounded and theoretically original engagements with a breadth of urban problematics from an anthropological and/or sociological perspective. Possible topics of research include (but are not restricted to) the dynamics of urban transformation and development, infrastructures and design, technology and smart cities, precarity, and violence. Candidates whose work engages with a transnational and Global South perspective are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be affiliated with the bi-disciplinary Department of Anthropology and Sociology. 

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in either Anthropology or Sociology and possess an established research agenda, a strong record of academic outputs, and an innovative and future-oriented research plan. Candidates must also have outstanding publications, a strong teaching philosophy, and an openness to interdisciplinary dialogue and urban comparative approaches. The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in department and institutional activities. 

The successful candidate will teach postgraduate courses and supervise master’s dissertations and Ph.D. theses in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology. They will also be called upon to teach classes and supervise master’s dissertations in interdisciplinary programs. Candidates from the Global South are encouraged to apply.

The teaching language is either English or French. Prior knowledge of French is not required, but the successful candidate is expected to acquire at least a passive knowledge of it within two years of being hired.
